About

Matthew Pereira is a Bay Area native from Concord California, with a bachelor's degree in Film & Digital Media from UC Santa Cruz, and a Masters of Fine Arts in Sound Design for Visual Media from Academy of Art University. Upon graduating in 2016, he initially set out to hone his skills as an audio engineer at two premiere SF locations, “Different Fur Recording Studios,” and “Disher Sound.” While working at Different Fur recording studios, he co-founded Liema SF, focusing on the post-sound needs for indie and commercial clientele. Around the pandemic he decided to revisit his filmmaking roots, getting behind the camera once again.

With a decade of experience in film post-production from sound design & re-record mixing, to film editing, and color grading, he’s worked within a range of formats from documentary, narrative fiction, and commercial workflows. His most recent work for Sazerac brand’s Fireball Whisky can be seen during the ad line-up of the NFL’s primetime scheduling. Working as the video editor, sound designer, and re-recording mixer, he has overseen the past several ad campaigns for Fireball Whisky’s various product lines.

Narrative Video Editing

In the narrative fiction format he is currently wrapping post-production on two short films aiming for the festival circuit. The first, “Respawn,” is a personally produced dark comedy sci-fi focused on fast paced and well-timed comedic beats. The narrative follows the protagonist through a rollercoaster of paranoia in this ground-hog-day style short film. Matthew worked as the Co-writer, producer, cinematographer, and facilitated all post-production needs for the film, from editing, VFX, color, sound design, and composition.

In the second narrative fiction project, Matthew has worked as a handful of post-production roles for Dir. Aaron Jone’s short comedy / drama, “Light Skinned.” The narrative follows the protagonist, an African American man, auditioning for a commercial in Oakland, CA. He is met with the internalized prejudices of an ignorant white man as the director of the commercial. He must then navigate through the director’s apparent blind spots while deciding whether the role is right for himself. Matthew has overseen several post-production processes from the film edit, to post-sound supervising, handling dialogue edit and mix, ambient sound design, foley mixing, and the final re-recording mix.

Post Sound

As his first passion within the film industry, sound design has been a favored skill for Matthew, leading to many short form narrative and documentary projects throughout the years. His most recent films Respawn and Light Skinned feature full sound design and re-recording mixes [as featured on the sound page]. Both films are currently wrapping post-production, with the aim of pitching to festivals in the latter half of 2026.

In the last few months of 2025, Matthew’s work as a sound designer and re-recording mixer has been making its festival circuit run. The short narrative fiction, “The Clock” (Dir. Cameo Wood 2025), has been featured in San Jose international short film festival, while a series of documentary shorts have played throughout California, from CAAMfest SF to CTFFest in Long Beach. Sound Design for Music

Throughout all of his creative endeavors, sound design has remained a central and crucial aspect. From commercial music production to composition for visual media, his aural palette has always leaned into otherworldly synthesized elements. Sometimes, however, you find yourself creating tools for the love of the craft. In the effort of helping creatives find their sound identity, he’s created Rare Media’s Flavor packs. These bespoke sound design sample packs can be used in varying projects, from your electronic music productions, or incorporated nicely into Sci-fi films. If you like the sounds of a particular pack, but would like to expand the flexibility into a personalized preset, please reach out for a custom quote.
